Kevin and I are expecting not one, but TWO sweet little babies this spring. What a relief to FINALLY tell the world our exciting news. I have been holding onto this secret for longer than I ever expected I could. From the time I found out there were two babies in my belly I have been incredibly nervous about losing one :( There is something out there called vanishing twin syndrome where one twin just doesn't make it. It's quite common so I have been holding off on sharing the news with the world until I finally felt safer about these two little jumping beans growing in my belly. I felt I'd rather wait until about half way for a twin pregnancy before the news went public and I did it. So… believe it or not I am almost 18 weeks pregnant at this point. Obviously those who see me every day found out a few weeks ago as it was getting increasingly harder to hide my growing belly.
Lucky me, I’m considered high risk simply because there are two babies. High risk translates as double the appointments. Every time I have a regular OB appointment I also have to go to the Center for Maternal and Fetal Medicine office. They are specialists highly trained in ultrasounds and checking on the health of twins. Therefore, on the up side I get a very detailed look at these babies every 4 weeks. We also get 4D shots each time. It is incredible to see how much change really happens in between appointments (see ultrasound pictures below). I’ve been told on more than one occasion that I have two little monkeys in my belly. The last two appointments have proved a little hard for the ultrasound tech as these babies have been flipping, kicking their legs towards their head, yawning, and sucking fingers. I had no idea that this could happen so early in their little bean lives.
Soon after Kevin and I found out we were pregnant I began an offline blog on what we were feeling, sharing the good news with our parents, finding out there was more than one baby in there, and a few other fun details of the journey so far. Over the next few days I will attempt to fill in the last 4 months. On another note, a few weeks after we found out we were pregnant Kevin was temporarily transferred to a project at a base just past Richmond. Needless to say he was not going to be commuting 3 hours each way every day. So, in August he became a weekend husband and has been doing his absolute best to be a part of everything he can while spending the week days away and making the drive back and forth almost every weekend. It was supposed to end sometime in October but has now been postponed to sometime in December We are keeping our fingers crossed this project doesn’t go any further as I’m not sure I will be able to handle not having him around for the third trimester. But, as with everything we are taking it one day at a time and are incredibly thankful for the solid job he has.
We’ve been lucky so far in that Kevin has made it home for every appointment. This week was our big OB appointment where we were able to find out the sex of the babies. I was going to postpone it if he couldn’t make it cause there was no way I was going to find out without him. Last minute he was able to re-arrange and make it home. We are excited to announce that sometime in March or early April we will be expecting a sweet baby boy and sweet baby girl. It is all still a bit surreal that we will have two babies not to mention that I get to have one of each…the best of both worlds the first time around! I have held off on buying anything so we are anxious to get going on the nursery, the baby registry, and all the fun stuff that comes with planning for our first birth(s). For now we are soaking in the good news that we will soon be a family of 4!
